Beginner’s Guide to Blogging

Blogging can be a great platform to earn money although it takes loads of dedication and patience. It can also be a great way to  promote a business, to keep a diary of your adventures and misadventures, to influence others about a cause, or just to express yourself in writing. Whatever your reasons may be, you obviously need to start somewhere and the big question is: How do you start your own blog?

At one point, all bloggers (including those who currently have relatively significant online presence in the blogging community) started from being completely clueless. The good news though is that starting a blog is not rocket science. There are just a few simple steps that you need to follow and, voila! You are off to a great start in your blogging journey.

 Blogging in 5 Easy Steps

  1. Choose a blogging platform
  2. Select a niche for your blog
  3. Pick a domain name
  4. Customize your webpage
  5. Write away!

Step 1: Choose a blogging platform

There are several blogging platforms to choose from such as Blogger, Tumblr, Weebly, Wix, SquareSpace and a whole lot more. And then there’s WordPress. I personally prefer WordPress because aside from being a free software, it also has a user-friendly layout that makes navigating and managing your blog content a breeze even if you’re new to the platform. A big plus as well is that you are not bound to having a boring interface for your blog even if your subscription is free because there are a variety of customizable themes and plugins available in WordPress that can be used either free of charge or for a fee.

Step 2: Select a niche for your blog

You might have already brainstormed on what to write about, but if you haven’t yet, you need to find a niche that your blog will primarily revolve around. Sometimes, selecting a niche is not as easy as it seems to be when there are different topics that you want to blog about. If you are blogging just for the heck of sharing your thoughts, then you can talk about anything and everything under the sun. However, if you are planning to eventually monetize your blog, you better check the advantages and disadvantages of having a multi-niche blog vs a single-niche blog.

Step 3: Pick a domain name

Now that you have already selected a blogging niche, you need to pick a domain name that would best reflect the essence of your website. This step requires a huge amount of time brainstorming because there are already millions of registered domains and chances are that the domain that you’ve been thinking of using has already been registered for other blogs or websites. You have to remember that your domain should be something that is short and easy to remember. Also, be careful in inadvertently selecting a name that would possibly infringe on another brand or company.

Step 4: Customize your blog

If you decide to use WordPress as your blogging platform, there are a lot of themes that you can choose from. You also have to select categories that would be relevant for your posts to make it easier for your audience to navigate on your blog. Make sure that you play around the tools available on your platform of choice and maximize the use of those tools.

Step 5: Write away!

Congratulations! You’re off to  write your first blog post.
